"I had been working as a mobile DJ for about 10 years and had always had an interest in radio. Back in 1993 there was very little to choose from on the radio locally, so I started bombarding Beacon Radio’s Pete Wagstaff with demo tapes.
The replies were all very encouraging but were gradually getting shorter and shorter. I thought it was time for a change of strategy…
I recorded and sent a demo tape to John Evington, Programme Controller of Signal Radio in Stoke on Trent.
The following day I had a message at work to say that John Evington’s Secretary had phoned for me and could I possibly phone her back? I called back about 30 seconds later (the delay was to avoid looking too keen!) and they wanted to set up a meeting.
